Preserving the Past, Building for the Future

July 28, 2023

Oranjestad, a city rich in history, culture, and commerce, stands as a treasure to preserve for future generations. The ongoing Revitalization Plan of Oranjestad is making significant strides, with the first phase focusing on the transformation of Wilhelminastraat. The goal is to create a vibrant and inviting city center, offering more than just shopping opportunities. Emphasizing the city’s unique attributes and encouraging diverse economic activities are at the forefront of this initiative.

Upcoming projects

Exciting developments are already underway, as the Government unveiled various upcoming projects. Plans include the construction of apartments and residential complexes to accommodate students and relocating government departments to the heart of the city. Among the upcoming attractions is a beer garden set to open in Wilhelminastraat in the upcoming months. Furthermore, the relocated office of Free Zone Aruba to the city center and the restoration of the historic Cas Veneranda building to house the Department of Economic Affairs by 2025 are crucial steps towards revitalizing the area. Another component of the revitalization effort is Condominium Solo 1, an attractive project that aligns with the Government’s vision of transforming Oranjestad into a thriving center of residential and culinary excellence.

Private investments

Private investors have also recognized the potential of beautifying the area. The restoration of the Pepe Margo House into an artisan Rum distillery serves as a prime example of rescuing Aruban heritage while providing a unique experience for locals and tourists alike.

Government commitment

However, the beautification of the city center alone cannot fulfill the grand vision of a bustling city. The Government of Aruba is committed to making this transformation possible. Investments in lighting, green spaces, security, parking, and infrastructure are crucial to enabling sustainable growth. By bringing government services to the main street, the flow of activity can attract more traffic and customers to the shops and businesses in the area.
