Urban Development Project Officially Started
The Aruba Investment Agency (ARINA) is pleased to announce the official start of one of the Landspakket projects, a government initiative financed by TWO Nederland. This project aims to deliver clear and targeted economic development plans for the revitalization of Oranjestad and San Nicolas. From November 10 to 14, consultant Henk Jagersma held an intensive series of meetings in Aruba. His visit marked a key step toward reshaping both city centers into vibrant, investment-ready districts that support Aruba’s long-term economic ambitions.
High-Level Government Engagement
During his visit, Mr. Jagersma held a joint meeting with Prime Minister Mike Eman, Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and Primary Sector Geoffrey Wever, and Minister of Infrastructure and Spatial Planning Rene Herdé. This combined discussion strengthened coordination across government and confirmed the national priority placed on revitalizing the urban cores. Such unified alignment gives investors greater certainty, stability, and direction as Aruba prepares new urban development opportunities.
Strong Stakeholder Participation
Throughout the week, Mr. Jagersma also spoke with a wide group of stakeholders. These included investors, property owners, entrepreneurs, financial institutions, business associations, and community organizations. The conversations were open and constructive, and they offered a realistic view of today’s business climate. A major theme during these discussions was the rapid growth of Airbnb and its effect on the housing market, pricing, and the balance between tourism and residential needs. Stakeholders also stressed the urgency of reducing red tape, since regulatory hurdles continue to slow down investment and project execution. These insights will guide the development of practical recommendations that support a more efficient and investor-friendly environment.
Deliverables Expected Soon
Now that the first round of fieldwork and consultations is complete, the project has moved into the analysis and planning stage. By the end of the first quarter, the consultant will deliver the Economic Development Plans for Oranjestad and San Nicolas. These plans will include implementation strategies, financing options, and a governance structure that supports effective and timely execution. As a result, investors will gain a clearer view of the opportunities emerging in both cities and the conditions needed to support their growth.
Next Major Initiative: Development of the RDA Terrain
In addition, Aruba is preparing to launch a second major development effort: the transformation of the RDA terrain in San Nicolas. This project will align closely with the revitalization work already underway. Together, these initiatives will create a strong and coordinated pipeline of investment opportunities across real estate, commercial activity, culture, and mixed-use development.
A Clear Signal to Investors
The launch of the Landspakket project demonstrates Aruba’s firm commitment to modernizing its city centers and creating a more predictable and transparent investment climate. ARINA will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the international investment community as Aruba moves into a new phase of economic growth and urban renewal.
