Strengthening Food Security in the Kingdom: Investment Opportunities in Aruba’s Agrifood Sector
Food security is a growing focus across the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The COVID-19 pandemic and recent global disruptions have highlighted the vulnerability of island economies that rely heavily on imported food. For Aruba, this challenge also presents a clear opportunity to strengthen local production, stimulate entrepreneurship, and attract sustainable investment.
To address these challenges, the Kingdom is establishing Stichting CariFoodFund (CFF) a revolving investment fund aimed at improving food security through access to finance, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The fund will support initiatives that strengthen local agriculture, horticulture, livestock, fisheries, and related supply chains, addressing the key dimensions of food security: availability, access, quality, and stability.
Financing for Entrepreneurs and Investors
CariFoodFund will offer tailored financial products, including soft loans and growth financing, specifically for food-sector entrepreneurs. The Dutch government has allocated €24 million for this initiative, with €18 million forming the fund’s equity and €6 million reserved for direct support to local governments. Through partnerships with banks and pension funds, the fund is expected to grow to at least €50 million, increasing its long-term impact and providing a sustainable investment vehicle.
Knowledge Development and Innovation
CariFoodFund will also establish an Academy to promote knowledge development and business capacity. The Academy will provide training, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing to entrepreneurs and public stakeholders, supporting innovation in local food production and strengthening the overall food ecosystem.
Opportunities for Investors
CariFoodFund presents a unique opportunity for local and international investors to participate in Aruba’s growing agrifood sector. By combining public and private capital, the fund supports sustainable local food production, innovation, and economic resilience, creating a platform for long-term growth and impact.
