Signing Ceremony Marks the Establishment of the Bernhardstraat Revitalization Foundation

September 9, 2025

On September 6, an important milestone was reached in the transformation of San Nicolas with the official signing ceremony for the establishment of the Bernhardstraat Revitalization Foundation. At a gathering, Mrs. Inky Richardson, Mr. John Hassell, and Mr. Castello Lispier formally signed the act to create the foundation. Its mission: to revitalize Bernhardstraat and restore it into a vibrant, welcoming street that celebrates the authentic character of Aruba’s Sunrise City. Prime Minister Mike Eman, together with Mr. Chris James of the Ministry of General Affairs, attended the ceremony to witness the signing and reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting this initiative.

Restoring History, Building the Future

The foundation’s primary objective is to restore the historic houses along Bernhardstraat, stretching from the Watertoren to the Lagoweg intersection, returning them as closely as possible to their original condition. Renovations will reflect the picturesque Caribbean style, characterized by colorful façades and warm, inviting architecture that honors the spirit of the San Nicolas community. Beyond restoring homes, the government will invest in public infrastructure upgrades, including sidewalks and green spaces, to complement the foundation’s work and enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors alike.

A Gateway to San Nicolas’ Charm

Bernhardstraat holds a strategic position, serving as a main passage for visitors heading to Baby Beach, Rodger’s Beach, and other attractions. Its revitalization will not only elevate the neighborhood but also provide a lively and welcoming introduction to San Nicolas. Prime Minister Eman emphasized the importance of collaboration between residents, the foundation, and the private sector in driving this project forward. Such partnerships are essential to creating lasting improvements that benefit the community while strengthening the city’s role in Aruba’s tourism landscape.

A Broader Vision for San Nicolas

The Bernhardstraat initiative marks just the beginning of a wider revitalization effort. Other streets and areas of San Nicolas will soon follow, building on the city’s growing momentum. Known for its thriving art scene, authentic dining, colorful architecture, and stunning beaches, San Nicolas is evolving into a vibrant tourism hub, one that blends Aruba’s cultural heritage with new opportunities for investment and growth. The establishment of the Bernhardstraat Revitalization Foundation highlights Aruba’s commitment to sustainable urban renewal and the ongoing transformation of San Nicolas into a destination where history, culture, and commerce thrive together.
