Revitalizing Wilhelminastraat: A New Chapter for Downtown Oranjestad
Wilhelminastraat is undergoing a major transformation that will reshape downtown Oranjestad into a vibrant and attractive urban center for residents, visitors, and investors. The Government of Aruba, together with the Oranjestad Investor Group (OIG), is driving this revitalization to strengthen the city’s economic and cultural appeal.
Project Scope
The project covers Wilhelminastraat from numbers 49/62 to the Wilhelminastraat–Kazernestraat intersection (excluding Plaza Daniel Leo). It also includes nearby streets such as Klipstraat, Oranjestraat, Rifstraat, and Schoolstraat. The plan aims to enhance the area’s visual appeal, improve walkability, and create a modern urban environment that preserves the district’s heritage while introducing contemporary design elements.
From Concept to Selection
To bring this vision to life, the government launched a public tender inviting architectural firms to submit proposals. Seven firms responded, and four were selected to pitch their concepts in person. Their presentations were reviewed by a committee including Ministers Mike Eman, Geoffrey Wever, René Herdé, representatives from the Department of Public Works (DOW), and investors from the Oranjestad Investor Group. The winning design, soon to be announced, will guide the preparation of final construction drawings and implementation plans.

In addition, the revitalization will boost economic activity by attracting new businesses, supporting entrepreneurship, and creating fresh investment opportunities in the city center. It will also enhance the quality of life for residents while strengthening Oranjestad’s identity as a lively, accessible, and culturally rich capital.
