New Partnership between LUMC and Aruba to Enhance Healthcare Services
On July 4th, at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between LUMC, the Country of Aruba, and the Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH). Representing LUMC, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Douwe Biesma, signed the agreement. For HOH, Jacco Vroegop, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Aruba’s Plenipotentiary Minister, Ady Thijsen, signed on behalf of the Minister of Health and Tourism, Dangui Oduber.
This collaboration will establish a study project focusing on specialties in ENT, neurosurgery, and maxillofacial surgery. Given the current healthcare situation in Aruba, particularly concerning manpower, this partnership is crucial. The project will explore how education and training can enable Aruban doctors to specialize and return to Aruba, addressing the shortage of specialists. This MOU is a vital first step towards significant achievements for HOH and Aruba.
The MOU aims to formalize intentions where the parties will collaborate on expanding specialty training, as well as knowledge and staff exchanges between HOH and LUMC. The agreement will create opportunities for Aruban professionals who meet LUMC’s selection criteria to secure training positions at LUMC. This collaboration is set to enhance the capabilities of healthcare professionals in Aruba and improve the island’s healthcare services. This partnership will strengthen the medical ecosystem of Aruba, making it more attractive for foreign medical practices to leverage the ever-growing skill and knowledge base.
