Aruba and Wageningen University Sign Letter of Intent to Advance Sustainability
The Government of Aruba has formalized its intention to strengthen strategic collaboration with Wageningen University & Research (WUR), one of the world’s leading research institutions in sustainability, environmental management, and food production. This initiative builds on more than ten years of successful cooperation between Aruba and WUR and marks an important milestone in the Government’s ambition to position Aruba as a regional hub for knowledge, sustainability, and innovation.
A Shared Vision for Aruba’s Future
As part of the meeting, both parties signed a Letter of Intent (LOI), confirming their commitment to expand and deepen the existing partnership. The LOI represents an important first step toward establishing a long-term and structured collaboration focused on sustainable development and scientific innovation.
In a symbolic gesture accompanying the signing ceremony, a dabaruida tree — locally known in Aruba as pan cu keshi — was planted as a symbol of growth, abundance, and a shared future. The selection of this tree reflects the shared vision of creating an environment rich in knowledge, opportunity, and sustainable progress for present and future generations.
Bringing Scientific Expertise to Aruba
Under the proposed agreement, the Government of Aruba intends to facilitate a physical presence for WUR on the island through an initial arrangement in which operational costs would be supported. The collaboration will initially focus on addressing local challenges through the direct application of scientific expertise to strengthen public policy and strategic decision-making.
Key Areas of Cooperation
The partnership is expected to focus on several strategic areas, including:
- Scientific support for the designation of nature reserves
- Implementation of the “Man and the Biosphere” concept
- Technical support in legal processes related to hotel development
- Assistance in preparing international environmental reporting, including CBD and SPAW reports
- Development of a national reforestation and food security program
- National dialogue and collaboration with the hospitality sector
Positioning Aruba as a Regional Sustainability Hub
The Government of Aruba views this collaboration as a unique opportunity to further integrate science into public policy while creating sustainable and innovative solutions to development challenges. Through this partnership, Aruba aims to strengthen its resilience, environmental stewardship, and long-term sustainable growth strategy while reinforcing its position as a forward-looking destination committed to sustainability and innovation.
