Aruba Aims to Become a Hydrogen Hub

September 6, 2023
Aruba’s government has unveiled ambitious plans to transform the former Valero oil refinery site in San Nicolas into a cutting-edge hydrogen hub. In a significant milestone, the government, in collaboration with Aruba’s utility companies WEB, Elmar, and RDA, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the multinational Acciona Energia, a Spanish firm renowned for its expertise in infrastructure development (construction, water, industrial projects, and services) and renewable energy solutions.

The envisioned hydrogen valley aims to serve as a nexus for the production, storage, and distribution of hydrogen, with versatile applications spanning vehicle propulsion, electricity generation, and cooling systems for residential and commercial properties.

Aruba boasts an ideal foundation for the emergence of a prominent hydrogen hub. The island has abundant renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, and ocean power. Additionally, its strategic geographical position within the Caribbean region positions it as a potential hub for transporting hydrogen to neighboring islands or in the region.

The establishment of a hydrogen valley in Aruba stands as a major step forward towards both the island’s energy transition and its economic development. This visionary initiative promises to diminish Aruba’s dependence on fossil fuels, ushering in a more sustainable future for the island.
